Signs and Graphics


This course offers a great foundation for anybody interested in a career in the art of sign making. Set in a modern workshop environment, learners are given expert tuition in both traditional techniques such as hand painted lettering, glass gilding (gold leaf), sandblasting and faux aged signs. The course also covers modern techniques such as computer designed signs, digital graphics, vehicle signage, t-shirt printing, graphic design and sign installation. The course also provides tuition on career planning and job seeking skills, as well as a separate certified module on starting your own business. All materials are supplied for this 25 week course. Age Requirement: Applicants must have reached the current statutory school leaving age.
Aptitude: Applicants must demonstrate an appreciation of and an aptitude for art and graphics, in conjunction with good visual awareness and a flair for proportion and form.
Education:QQI Level 4 or equivalent.

On completion of the training programme learners will be able to:- State the planned outcomes and the conditions attached to attendance on the course; apply good safety, health and hygiene practices; state the basic principle involved in environmental issues and explain the meaning of equal opportunities. explore the principles and procedures of Graphic Design and to apply acquired skills to produce a body of work that illustrates both problem solving and effective visual communication through design. Design and produce a variety of traditional decorative hand painted and gilded signs using appropriate materials and techniques working under supervision. Design and produce a variety of computer generated signs and graphics using appropriate materials and techniques particular to the signmaking industry whilst working under supervision. Outline the processes involved in starting, operating and evaluating a business; appreciate the importance of good planning, organisation, implementation and evaluation skills; explain how a range of internal and external factors can influence the development of a business Plan and achieve realistic work goals.
